Auto insurance and mobility

Auto insurance and mobility is the cover, pricing and claims built around cars, fleets and the technology that increasingly prices and services them. It spans standard liability and comprehensive cover, telematics-based pricing, embedded policies sold through automakers, and new products for electric and autonomous vehicles.
How a car gets priced and covered
A motor policy still rests on the same basics as any other line: an insurer assesses risk, sets a premium and pays claims when a covered vehicle is damaged or causes damage. What has changed is how the risk is assessed and where the policy is bought. Telematics, a phone app or a device fitted to the car, feeds driving behavior back to the insurer, so premiums move with how someone actually drives rather than only their age, postcode and claims history. Distribution has moved too: automakers, fleet managers and ride-hailing platforms now embed cover directly into the vehicle purchase or the trip, with an insurer or MGA underwriting behind the brand a driver actually sees.
Why pricing accuracy matters more now
Auto is one of the highest-volume, most price-sensitive lines an insurer writes, so small improvements in risk selection compound across many policies. Electric vehicles complicate that: battery packs and sensor-heavy bodywork make repairs costlier and parts harder to source, and insurers with little claims history on newer models are effectively pricing blind. Autonomous and driver-assist features shift liability questions toward the vehicle maker rather than the driver, which existing policy wording was not written to answer. Regulators are also unsettled about how much telematics and AI-driven pricing an insurer can use without treating drivers unfairly, leaving carriers to build models against rules still being written.
What the coverage below shows
The companies active here split into three groups: telematics-first insurers built on usage-based pricing, established carriers and brokers digitizing existing motor books, and device or platform makers partnering with insurers rather than underwriting themselves. Early coverage leaned toward the first group proving out behavior-based pricing region by region; recent activity leans toward partnerships, an insurer teaming with an automaker, a telematics vendor or a claims platform rather than building every piece alone. Broker consolidation and acquisitions run alongside this, plus a steady thread on electric-vehicle-specific cover. The subject regularly overlaps with funding, claims technology and partnerships rather than standing apart from them.
Personal, fleet and embedded cover are different businesses
Three distinct markets sit under one label. Personal auto insurance is sold to individual drivers, increasingly through telematics apps or comparison sites acting as brokers. Fleet and commercial motor cover serves businesses running many vehicles, where safety and telematics vendors sell into fleet operators alongside the insurer rather than to the driver directly. Embedded auto cover is newer still: an automaker or EV maker bundles a policy into the vehicle purchase or a mobility app, with an underwriter working behind that brand. The vocabulary overlaps but the buyer, the sales channel and the risk profile differ enough that a product built for one rarely transfers cleanly to another.
