Takaful (Islamic cooperative insurance)
17 stories mention it
Takaful is an Islamic form of cooperative insurance, where participants pool contributions into a shared fund to cover one another's losses. An operator manages the fund for a fee, and surplus or shortfall is shared among participants rather than kept by shareholders.
In practice, participants pay contributions that are treated as donations into a common fund rather than premiums paid to an insurer. A takaful operator manages underwriting, claims and investment of that fund, typically for a fee or a share of any profit, an arrangement known as wakala or mudaraba. Claims are paid out of the pooled fund itself, and retakaful is the equivalent of reinsurance, spreading risk across the pool.
Conventional insurance involves elements considered impermissible in Islamic law: interest-bearing investment, excessive uncertainty in the contract, and an element of gambling in how risk is transferred for profit. Takaful restructures the relationship as mutual risk-sharing among participants rather than a sale of protection to a for-profit insurer, with a Shariah board overseeing the fund's investments and contracts. A common misunderstanding is that takaful is conventional insurance under an Islamic label; the real difference is who owns any surplus and how the money behind it is invested.
In insurance technology, takaful mainly shows up in digital distribution: motor and family protection sold through embedded checkout flows, telecom and e-commerce partnerships, and apps run by takaful operators themselves. Behind the interface, platforms must handle wakala or mudaraba fee structures and keep participant-fund accounting separate, which conventional policy administration systems are not built for, so that integration and fund administration are common areas for dedicated tooling.
