Microinsurance

7 stories mention it

Microinsurance is insurance scaled down in premium and payout size for people with low, irregular incomes who conventional coverage overlooks. It is distributed through mobile networks, cooperatives and other channels that reach customers a traditional agent force cannot.

A policyholder pays a small, often irregular premium — sometimes folded into a mobile airtime top-up, a loan instalment or a cooperative membership fee — in exchange for cover against one narrow risk, such as a hospital stay, a crop failure or a death in the family. An insurer or reinsurer still carries the underlying risk; what differs from ordinary retail insurance is the distribution layer between them, typically a mobile network, a microfinance lender or a community group that already reaches the customer and can collect premiums an agent network could not profitably handle.

It exists because these customers are otherwise priced out or ignored: premiums and claims are too small and incomes too irregular for products built around annual premiums and in-person underwriting. The hard part is arithmetic, not concept — administrative cost per policy must fall close to zero, and claims must be verified and paid quickly without the paperwork a conventional claim assumes. A common misunderstanding is that microinsurance means thin coverage; the pooling and capital behind it work like any other insurance, only the unit size and delivery channel differ.

In insurance technology, microinsurance is mostly a distribution and claims-automation problem. Companies build embedded products sold at the point of a loan, a phone purchase or a delivery, parametric triggers that pay out automatically against a measured event such as rainfall or flight delay rather than a filed claim, and mobile-first onboarding and payment rails that let a premium be collected and a claim settled entirely on a handset.
