Insurtech is the application of software, data and automation to insurance: selling policies, pricing risk, underwriting and paying claims. It spans new entrants building products from scratch and established insurers modernizing legacy systems, with brokers, reinsurers and investors involved throughout.
How technology plugs into a policy's lifecycle
An insurance policy still needs the same functions it always has, pricing risk, collecting premium, handling a claim, and insurtech is the layer of software that sits on top of or inside those functions. A carrier or a managing general agent supplies the balance sheet and the underwriting rules; a technology company supplies the interface, the data pipes or the automation that speeds a quote, a bind or a payout. Some insurtechs sell policies directly to consumers or businesses; others sell software to carriers and brokers who keep doing the selling themselves; a growing group embeds cover inside another company's checkout or app so the policy is bought without the buyer visiting an insurer's own website.
Why insurers are under pressure to adopt it
Insurance is a regulated, capital-intensive business built on decades-old policy administration systems, which makes it slower to change than most industries software has already reshaped. The hard part is not the interface; it is the underwriting math underneath it, a model that prices risk badly loses money quietly, sometimes for a long stretch, before anyone notices. That is why the sector's failures tend to look alike: fast growth built on underpriced risk, followed by a painful correction once the claims arrive. The pressure to modernize anyway comes from cost, since legacy claims and policy systems are expensive to run, and from customers who expect a quote and a claim to move at the pace of any other digital purchase.
What the coverage here actually shows
The companies active span the range the definition implies: consumer-facing carriers reporting results alongside software providers selling into incumbents, and insurers taking stakes in or partnering with technology platforms rather than building in-house. Coverage keeps landing on neighbouring subjects rather than staying self-contained: funding and public-market results for the insurtechs that have gone public, embedded distribution deals with banks and retailers, and steady activity in Asian and African markets where digital-first insurance is still being built out. The overall tone leans toward profitability and underwriting discipline over growth, with investors and incumbents watching claims performance as closely as customer counts.
The different shapes an insurtech takes
Insurtech companies fall into a few shapes that are easy to conflate. A full-stack carrier takes on underwriting risk itself and answers to insurance regulators directly. A managing general agent underwrites on behalf of a carrier's balance sheet without holding the risk itself, letting it move faster with less capital. A software vendor never touches risk at all and instead sells claims, underwriting or policy administration tools to carriers and brokers who remain the insurer of record. A distribution or embedded player focuses on the point of sale, arranging cover inside someone else's product rather than building either the risk or the software beneath it.
