Marine insurance

8 stories mention it

Marine insurance covers physical loss or damage to ships and cargo, and the liabilities that arise while goods move by sea. The modern market is dominated by cargo cover, which typically follows a shipment door-to-door across sea, rail and road legs.

A shipper or cargo owner buys a policy, usually through a broker, that pays out if goods are lost, damaged or delayed between origin and destination. Hull and machinery cover insures the vessel itself, while protection and indemnity clubs, mutual associations owned by shipowners, cover liability to third parties such as crew injury or pollution. Claims are checked by surveyors before payment.

Marine insurance is one of the oldest branches of the trade, developed to spread the risk of a single vessel or cargo lost at sea across many underwriters. A common source of confusion is exactly when cover attaches and ends, since responsibility for goods shifts between buyer and seller mid-journey under trade terms such as Incoterms, and a policy must be read against those terms rather than assumed. General average, where all parties to a voyage share an extraordinary loss, has no real equivalent in other insurance lines.

In insurance technology, marine cargo cover is a frequent target for embedding: shipping platforms, freight forwarders and trade-finance apps offer coverage at the point of booking through an API rather than a separate policy purchase. Automation also extends to digital certificates of insurance, compliance checks against sanctioned parties or restricted routes, and underwriting or claims tools built specifically for cargo rather than adapted from general property lines.
